Most of us have seen a smile that we envy. Perhaps it was a favorite movie star’s smile or even a co-worker’s seemingly flawless smile. While some people are blessed with a naturally gorgeous smile, most people could use a little help to make their smile as perfect as it is. That’s where cosmetic dentistry comes in. If you have unsightly stains or damaged teeth, you may need porcelain veneers to take your smile to a whole new level.
Natural-looking veneers are made from extremely thin porcelain layers bonded to your teeth to camouflage stains or other cosmetic dental issues. Porcelain veneers are custom-made to match the color and shape of your natural teeth perfectly. As a result, it is difficult for others to detect that you have veneers.
When you think of veneers, you may think they’re mostly for hiding unsightly stains on teeth. And you’re correct in that porcelain veneers are perfect for camouflaging tooth stains. However, porcelain veneers can also be used to address these common dental issues:
Most people with cosmetic dental issues on their front teeth that they would like to address are good candidates for cosmetic veneers. However, Dr. Ramin Mirmooji will first need to thoroughly examine your teeth and gums to ensure your oral health is solid enough to proceed. If a person has gum disease or tooth decay, these issues must be handled before the veneer process begins. Also, if you have malocclusion, you may need braces before veneers can be bonded to your front teeth.
To begin the porcelain veneers process, Dr. Mirmooji will trim your teeth using a grinding tool. This process removes a small amount of your natural dental enamel, a necessary step to ensure your veneers fit properly and blend naturally with your other teeth.
Once your teeth are prepared, the team will take molds of them. These molds will be sent to a lab, where technicians create custom-designed veneers for you. You will work closely with Dr. Mirmoooji’s team to choose the precise shade of your veneers. In a couple of weeks, your veneers will arrive, and you’ll return to the office to have them bonded to your teeth.
The veneer process is permanent because some of your natural dental enamel is removed for placement. For this reason, it is irreversible. With good oral hygiene and care, porcelain veneers usually last up to 10 years.
