The seven steps to root canal treatment
For some patients who visit Msmiline Cosmetic Dentistry of Pierrefonds, Quebec, root canal therapy may be required to save a tooth from extraction. This procedure is often done as a last effort to keep a tooth from being removed and replaced. It involves the removal of the inner dental pulp to maintain the tooth structure while treating an infection inside. Drs. Ramin Mirmooji and Samer Abboud walk patients through the steps required for root canal treatment to help them better understand the goal of the procedure and what to expect during the visit.
What are the seven steps to root canal therapy?
- Evaluation and consultation. Our team at Msmiline Cosmetic Dentistry will never recommend a treatment that is not medically necessary for you. During the first assessment, we will evaluate the tooth in question and determine if root canal therapy is needed.
- X-ray imaging. In order to properly diagnose and plan the root canal procedure, our team takes X-ray images of your teeth, including CBCT 3D imaging, to determine the extent of the infection and any potential complications.
- Local anesthesia. The thought of receiving a shot in your mouth may make you cringe, but it is necessary for a comfortable procedure. We use local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth undergoing treatment. We also provide intraosseous and sedation dentistry solutions like nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” to help put you further at ease.
- Accessing the infected tooth. Once you are fully numbed, Drs. Ramin Mirmooji and Samer Abboud create an opening in the top or back of your tooth to access the dental pulp chamber where infected tissue resides.
- Cleaning and shaping of the canals. After accessing the infected tooth, our dentists use small instruments to clean out the decayed tissue and bacteria from the canals. This step is critical in preventing any further infection and promoting healing.
- Filling and sealing the canals. Once the canals are thoroughly cleaned, our team fills them with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. This material helps seal off the canals to prevent any future infections.
- Restoring the tooth. After completing root canal therapy, your treated tooth must be restored for proper function and aesthetics. Depending on your unique situation, our experienced dentists might recommend a dental crown or filling to strengthen and protect the tooth.

He has trained in adult and pediatric orthodontics, occlusion, and dental surgeries and has earned many diplomas. He has been a member of the Ordre des Dentistes du Québec, CDA, Association des Chirurgiens Dentistes du Québec, Proprietary Dentists of Quebec, and the National Dental Examining Board of Canada.
